Programs for Children Ages 8-12

NetSmartz has programs for children and youth that range in age from 4 to 17 years.The focus of the program is on Internet safety, avoiding Internet luring and how to stay safe in tricky situations.The modules include games, activities as well as videos to help the students make age appropriate decisions to help stay safe. w.netsmartzkids.com

Media Awareness Network (MNET) offers the world’s most comprehensive collections of media and digital literacy resources.There are age appropriate games for the younger children in this group as well as learning modules for all ages with an emphasis on critical thinking skills needed for the students to make empowered choices.Some of the modules include online marketing to kids, authentication of website urls and media violence and what is means, who it affects? www.media-awareness.ca

Positive Body Image - Components of this program can be found in the resources from Media Awareness Network (MNET) as it addresses the pressure on pre teens and predominantly girls to “look a certain way”, “weigh a certain amount” etc.The program is interactive and guides the students into looking at the issue from a variety of ways and how they can best deal with this issue that surrounds them.

Preventing Dating Violence - This program address the very real issue of dating violence for students ages 11 and 12; it is a precursor to the program offered to older students.It shows the students what the “signs” are and what kind of decisions can they make to keep themselves safe.The program is interactive and includes documentary films, short videos and worksheets to help the students address their current situation and seek help and a safe haven.

Runaway Prevention – This program addresses the issue of running away and is best suited for 11 and 12 year olds.The purpose is to get the students thinking about healthier choices ��������?ᬮ���?�?? what else can they do/where can they go before they leave home for the streets?Documentaries as well as online activities help the students see what awaits them on the street and in turn, where else can they turn?How to help a friend who is considering running away from home.

Smart Kids Safe Streets Program - Combination DVD with curriculum which was created to elicit discussion with children about personal safety & empowerment issues.The DVD vignettes give the audience an opportunity to see some of the issues that the children are dealing with and then encourage them to develop age appropriate decisions through dialogue and other interactive activities.

Bullying Prevention program is made up of lesson plans from Media Awareness Network & NetSmartz.Both programs offer interactive and online activities for the children ages 8 to 12 years.

Girls Only Programs includes all of the above program material presented in “girls only” groups when requested.The Child Safety & Education Division recognizes that offering these programs to a girl’s only group can be very beneficial to the group; it will help with the discussion, honesty and disclosure.Alternatively, “boys only” programs can be offered as well.
